Public Notices.'A Great Historical Publication. OTAGO DAILY TIMES AND WITNESS CHRISTMAS "ANNUAL 18&9. TO BE PUBLISHED IN TIME FOR DELIVERY EVERY WHERE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. The Proprietors of the Otago Daily Times and Witness wish to lay before the readers of both papers a Synopsis of the Contents of ■their 1599 CHRISTMAS ANNUAL, which will bo published at a sufficiently early date to enable its being mailed to the Old Country in time for receipt before Christmas. The main feature will deal with the Engrossingly interesting subject of WRECKS OF'THE OOLONY From the ante-settlement days up to the middle of 1899. The letterpress, the compilation of which has entailed many months' research among old newspaper files and records of various descriptions, is from the pen of the favourite Witness writer, FABIAN BELL, and though fact, not fancy, has been the pervading note of the compilation throughout, the narrative is written in a manner which cannot Tail to interest the readers from beginning to end. It is at this early stage scarcely possible to give a full list of the photogravures which will illustrato the story of marine disaster on our rugged coast-line, but they will be worthy of the subject. • The following incomplete enumeration will give readers an idea of the pictorial contents of this section of our coming Christmas Annual: " The Father recognises his own Child." " FABIAN BELL " has given her interesting compilation the telling title of "The Toll of the Sea," and explains that it is a complete record of the chief wrecks which have occurred in New Zealand waters from the year 1795 to the present date, together with the most interesting events connected with them. OTHER FEATUEEB OP THE PUBLICATION. The story of "The Maori Leap," told in connection with the projecting wall of rock which attracts the eye on the Taiefi River soon after leaving Henley for the Taieri Mouth, has had many exponents, and this is the subject adopted by Mr F. A. Joseph in his sketch entitled "TE RERENtiA 0 TU HOKAIRAMfII." The facts dealt with in the narrative have been carefully gleaned from tho lips of one or two of the survivors of tho older generation of Maoris at Henley, and the writer has dealt with his subject hi an interesting and pleasing manner. This sketch contains a number of illustrations from photographs of the various points dealt with, including one of Korako Mateue, the Maori Leap, John Bull's Head, Moua Hill, besides views near Governor's Chimney (Taieri River). Another phase of South Island Maori life is dealt with by Mr A. W. Maurais in his sketch "THE RETURN OF HIM 3 TABSITAU," a reminiscence of the early whaling days, in which some well-depicted characters are dealt with. This sketch has been SPECIALLY ILLUSTRATED BY Miss f. hqdus, a fact which adds very materially to its attractiveness. " FEDORA " continues one of her exquisite Children's Tales, entitled " THE TRUTH TALISMAN." This has also been specially illustrated by Misa Hodgkins. " Dot and her Little Folks " is a household term among Witness readers, and a happy suggestion made by one of tho juvenile correspondents that a group should be gathered together for reproduction in the Christmas Annual is being carried into effect, and thia will unquestionably be an interesting feature of the Annual. The Annual will, as usual, contain the • TEN PRIZE TALES, which will bo again illustrated by Mias Hodgkins; while THE OHBO^OL6OSCAL RECORD will be brought up to date in the same manner as was done last year.
