at poker than two pairs. Glenore.—Adhesive postage stamps came into use shortly after Queen Victoria commenced to reign in 1837. The idea appears to have originated with. James Chalmers; who, in . 1834, printed some stamps at his office in Dundee as an experiment. Rowland Hill brought the^ subject of adhesive stamps under notice' in February, 1837, and they came into use ill 1840. Zurich and Brazil followed Britain's lead'in'lß-13.
Allens.—(l) There is no universal custom regarding the use of party colours at election time in England. For instance, we know that in some districts the Conservatives use blue and the Liberals yellow; while m other parts of the country the Conservative colour is pink, and the Liberals wear the blue. Possibly there>are other variations. (2) War was declared by Britain and France against Russia on March 28, 1851, and large masses of troops were sent to the East. After remaining some time at Gallipoli they sailed for Varna, whore they disembarked' -bn May 29. A departure was made from Varna on September 3, and the troops wero landed about 30 miles from Sebastopol ou the 14th, 15th, and 16th of the same month.
