PRIZE TALE COMPETITION,

The Proprietors of the Otago Daily Times and Witness beg to announce that a Prize Tale Competition on the same lines as tha. of last year will be held in connection with their Christmas Annual, to be published at the end of the current year. The Tales will again be profusely illustrated, a fact whicH necessitates the MS. being m our hands somewhat earlier than would otherwise be necessary. The illustrating will be p.acecl in competent hands, and as the whole issue will be printed on super-calendar paper, this feature of the Christmas Annual may again be looked forward to as one of special interest. Ten prizes will be awarded, ranging from £5 to 10s, and totalling £27 10s.

THE PRIZE'TALE COMPETITION will extend from April 1 to June 30, and PHIZES TO THE VALUE OP £21 10s will be offered as below: — ' First Prize £5 0 0 Second Prize 4 10 0 Third Prize 4 0 0 Fourth Prize 3 10 0 Fifth Prize 3 0 0 Sixth Prize 2 10 0 So\Wh Prize 2 0 0 EU-hlh Prize 1 10 0 Ninth Prize 10 0 Tenth Prize 0 10 0 And the proprietors reserve to themselves- the right to U3O any other tale in the competition fit" the same rate of remuneration as the 10th prizeCONDITIONS OF THF. PRIZE TALE COMPETITION. No tnlc to exceed 3000 words in length. While Colonial Subjects will have the preference, the Plot need not necessarily have a C'cienial Foundation. Each tale to be accompanied by a speciallywritten description of the chief characters or the chief incident, which will bs placed by the publishers in the hands of a competent artist to be sketched for reproduction as a half-tone engraving. As an alternative to this a sketch of "the character or incident would be acceptable. The judging will be placed in the hands of a thoroughly competent and independent authority, and the announcement of the awards will, if possible, be made a month after the close of the competition. All MS. to have a norn de plume attached, aivl to be accompanied by a sealed envelope addressed to the Editor of the Otngo Witness, containing the writer's name and address, the name of the tale, and the norn de plume attached to the MS. This envelope will remain unopened until the receipt of the awards from the judge. All tales to be original, and the bona fide work of the writer. MS to be in the Editor's hands not later than FRIDAY, 30th JUNE, 1899.
