THE DIRECT STEAMERS.

1 WELLINGTON, April 14.—Sailed: Fifoebire, for London. She shipped the following freight from Wellington—6soo carcases sheep, 3323 carcases lambs, 883 quarters beef, 40 backs oxtails, 44-5 cases butter, s*o cases preserved meats, 232 casks tallow and pelts, and 553 eases cheese. Her passengers were: Misses Stanford (2), Pinknoy (2), Sale, Mesdames. Bacon, Pinkney. Scott, Messrs Pinkney (2), Stanford, and Lightfoot.

The s.s. Te Anau sailed for Auckland, via Way ports, yesterday afternoon. The s.s. Ribston, .from New York, is now due, and may ho expected U put in an appearance any ■ hour. ■ She is coming here direct.

The s.s. Mararoa, from Sydney, via Auckland, is due to-morrow, and is expected to arrive in time •to come up by the morning tide, between 7P and 8 o'clock.

The s.s. Napier, from the south, arrived late on Thursday night, and sailed yesterday for Waikawa. '

The s.s. Taupo, from Wcsiport, arrived early yesterday morning. She was to have sailed again in the afternoon, but on account of the heavy downpour of rain cargo could not be handled', and her departure had to be postponed until to-day. The Shaw. Savill, and Albion Company's new steamship. Wanvera, from Glasgow, arrived at the heads at 8 a.m. yesterday, and was ordered to proceed north. The s.«. Ruahine commenced io discharge car£o at the George street pier. Port Chalmers,, yesterday. Tfje U.S.S. Company's Manapouri, which faaz recently undergone a perfect overhaul, will make a trial trip down the harbour this bfte'rnoon.

Many inquiries have recently been made as to the health of Captain Hercules Anderson, the marine superintendent of the Shaw, SaviH, and Albion Company, who has been for some lime at Blenheim. We are glad to say that the genial captain has improved in health durintr, his sojourn in the north. Tlie s.s. Talune, Having been delayed, did not reach Lytt'elton till last evening, and consequently will not arrive at Dunedin till Sunday.

THE NEW STEAMER "WAIWERA.

The, Shaw, Savill, and Albion Shipping Company's new steamship Waiwera. from Glasgow", arrived off Otngo Heads at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. She left Glasgow on the 26th February, and passed the s.s. Tokomaru on March 1, outward bound, in Int. 41.11 N.. long. 11-05 W. The Island of Tenci-iiro was passed on March. 4. and'thence she had fresh trade winds from the N.E. to the S.K., attended by very fine weather. Her passage across the Southern Orair was a fairly good one, and she arrived at Olago Heads yesterday, aftoi an excellent riuv of 46 days 5 hours and 20 minutes from Glasgow. Neither ice nor wreckage was seen across Iho Southern Ocean.

'Che Waiwera is commanded by thai popular master Captain John Stuart, so wellknown hero as the pioneer commander of tho s.s. Ar,awa. Captain Stuart has associated with him Mr Lowden as chief officer (Hiis gentleman was last here in the s.s. Pakeha), Mr J. B. Rainey as second officer (ho will bo well remembered as an officer of tho steamships Mutivnra and Gothic), Mr J. G. Moylc as third officer, and Mr J. Musters as fourth. The chief engineer is Mr J. M'Pherson (well-known here.in the s.s. Tainui and Arawa), and Mr Alexander is second engineer. Ml King, late steward in charge of _tho s.s Pakeha, occupies a similar position in the new boat. After anchoring outside for a time the Waiwera received orders, and was sent on to LyUoKon Heads for further instructions.
