CITY POLICE COURT.

THynSDAY, April 13. (Before Mr B. H. Carew, S.M.)

Drunkenness. —One first offender was convicted and discharged.—George Mackay pleaded guilty to furiously riding a horse in George street, and not guilty to being drunk while doing so.—Sergeant O'J^eill stated that accused waß found by the constable riding a horse along George street at » furious pace. Ho was the worse for drink, and fell off the animal, which had no saddle on its back.—Evidence having been given by tho police, the case was adjourned to next day to allow of the watch-house keeper giving evidence.—Peter Gibson was fined Ss, or 24 hours' imprisonment, for being drunk.

Tndigent Children.—Ellen, Rosina, Lilly, Kdith, Charles, Frank, and Albert Henry Bamvell were brought before the court for being, children within the,meaning of tlio In> diislrial Schools Act.—Detective M'Grath mentioned that these were the children of Charles and Mary Bauwell, who had been sentenced to three months' imprisonment on Tuesday last. There were two'elder brothers, but they were only able to support themselves.—The boys were committed to St. Maryle.Nelnori, and the girls to St.; Vincent., do Paul Orphanage, South Dunedin. ; Maintenance.—Robert M'Carrigan was charged with failiug to contribute towards' the maintenance of his mother, Mary M'CarriSjan.—Mr White appeared for defendant, who was in Cromwell.—After evidence, an order was made for the payment of 5s a week.— An order was made against Archibald Burfc ' to contribute 5s a-week towards the support of the illegitimate child of Agnes Orr, of which he was'the father.

Cruelty to a Horse.—Joseph Dick pleaded Utility to having, on the 7th March, at Green Island, illtrcated a horse by whipping it excessively, and jerking and sawing its mouth witj^ the bit and reins.—Mr Hanlon appeared for defendants-Mr Solomon mentioned that the honse-was in a lather of sweat, and that Mr Loo Smith reported the matter to. the society. Defendant had admitted that he was under the influence of drink.—Fined 20a and costs (£1 16b), ' .
