ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. RIMU.
Mr Keith Ramsay's splendid new coasting steamer Rimu, Captam C. F.- Sundstrom, arrived at Port Chalmers at 7 o'clock on Saturday evening, afterwards coming up to Dunedin. She left Preston on December 14, and, as it was blowing a fresh westerly gale, Captain Sundstrom iound it impossible to land the pilot, so went into Hoiyhead at 2.20 a.m. nex. day and landed him. Sailed again at 1 p.m., passed the Smalls on the 16th at 1.28 am, breasted Cape Finisterre on the 18th, and had light south-west - winds with thick weather across the Bay of Biscay. After passing Cape Finisterre, the wind hauled to the east, and continued till arrival at Malta on the 26th. At Malta she coaled, and effected some slight repairs to the feed pumps, sailing again on the 2Sth. Arrived at Port Said on January 2, and, after coaling, sailed again and passed through Suez Canal next day, having anchored in the Bitter Lake one night Passed Suez the following day, and carried a fine north wind most of the way down the Red Sea. Passed Perim at 7.15 a.m. on the 10th. At 7 p.m. the same day anchored in Aden Bay, took in coal, and sailed at 7 o'clock next morning. Arrived at Colombo on the 22nd, having experienced a very strong N.E. monsoon. Coaled, and sailed again oil the 24th at 8.20 p.m. Arrived at Albany on February 12. Had the S.E. trades strong at times; "had strong south..winds and heavy rain fronvjCarJe Leuwin to Albany. Left Albany on the 13th for Dunedin direct. Passed Tasmania'on the 2Mb, and made Puysegur Point on the 24th at 6 p.m. Had light northerly wind 3 with fine weather •' across the Tasman "Sea." Met a fresh south-east and east wind whefl within 100 miles of the New Zealand' coast, which moderated off Centre Island. P;v3sea the Bluff at 4 a.m. on the 25th, arriving as above. The whole passage took 73 days, but the actual steaming time was (53 days. . ' The s.s. Rimu is an acquisition to the coasting trade. Her dimensions are as follows:— Length between perpendiculars, 140 ft; breadth, 04ftT depth of hold, IC-fi 3in. Her net register is 143 tons, but her gross capacity is 280 tons , dead weight. She is fitted with two sets oftriple expansion engin?3, with lOiin, 16in, said 28in cylinders, having a stroke of 22rn. Her boilers are 10ft in diameter by Bft 6m, capable of a working pressure of 2001b to the square ! inch.
