INQUEST AT SADDLE HILL.
An inquest was held yesterday at the residence of Mr Walter Smith, Saddle Hill, concerning the death of his son, George Herbert, eight and a-half years old, who was drowned in a dam iif the district. The inquest was conducted by Mr James Miller, J.l\, and a iury of six, arid evidence was given by Thomas Smith, Frank Major, Robert Turner, and John Johnston. The evidence substantially was thai, on baturday afternoon tho deceased and four other boys went to bathe in Christie's dam, at Saddle Hill. Deceased wont into what is known as "The Ditch," and sank. His brother David jumped in, -and tried to save him,-but, getting beyond .his depth and being unable to swim, had to relinquish the.attempt. The boys ran for deceased's elder brother, who on reaching the scene searched for the body, and recovered it about 20 minutes afterwards, but life was then extinct. Dr Will was sent for and also Constable O'Sullivan, and. both examined the body, but found no marks of violence upon it. . A verdict of "Accidentally drowned .in Christie's dam was returned.
