SPOTTING.

PALMERSTON RACES.

The Palmerston Racing Club's Summer meoting; was held at Shag Valley on Monday. Although theweather was slightly showery in the morningj it cleared up beautifully before the first race started) and remained fine'for tho rest of the ,day. The attendance was larger than it has been for some years, among those present being a number of bookmakers, who were ohargedffiS 3s by the club for the privilege of betting. The presence of these " gentlemen " apparently interfered a good deal with the totalisator, Messrs Mason and Roberts only putting £662 through the machine, during the meeting. There were two protests during the day. In the first instance M'Hroy.'the rider,of Off Chance, who came in second in the Flying Hajidicap, protested against the stakes being paid over to Silverstream on tho ground, that T. Buddicomb, his rider, ■ crossed him whennear homey and thus spoilt his (M'llroy's) chances of winning. When the stewards met to consider th(?..matter. Buddicomb admitted that he crossed in front. of Off Chance /but said that when he'did'so he was fully two lengths ahead. ' Tha*protest was' dismissed" by a .very narrow majority.' ' The second protest occurred in the Mile and'ahalf Trot. M. Allan in this case objected to Fairy being declared the winner on the ground of inconsistent running. Mr L. M'Kay, the owner of Fairy, said that he not only had no money on iiis horse, which was not -backed at- all> on'the. totalisator, but that he had advisea others not to put anything on her. After other evidence had'been heard, it was decided, on tne casting vote of the chairman, to dismiss, the. protest. The Waikouaiti and Waihemo County Plate afforded the closest finish of the day, Santa Barbara getting home by a head after a neck-and-neck race for some distance with My Lord. In this race young Foster, who.'was riding Sweep/ fell off at the entrance'to the straight, but was not serionsly hurt. ' The dividends during the day were mostly small, the largest one being 'in- the Novel Handicap, 111 which P.P.C. returned those who-' invested on him £12.
