4. vote was taken yesterday in the city and suburbs on the proposal of the Ocean Beach Domain Board to levy a rate of id in the pound on the rateable value of property in tho several boroughs for the purpose of raising funds.to carry out certain works on the Ocean Beach Domain. Very little interest was taken in the poll, as will bs seen when it is stated that although about 6600 ratepayers, having nearly 10,000 votes, were entitled to vote, only 1836 votes were cast at the poll. Of this number 1033 votes were recorded against the proposal to levy a. rate, and 775 in lavour of it, there bein<? 28 informal votes. The proposal was therefore lost- by a majority of 258 votes. The only places in which a .majority of votes were recorded in favour of tho proposal were the boroughs of Caversham, South Dunedin, and St. Kilda. The details of the voting are a= follow: — . ■ For. North-East Valley.. 23 .. 78 Totals '.. ~ 775 .. 3,033 In the city, the number of ratepayers qn the roll is approximately 2200, with 14-S7 votes; in Caversham 6DO ratepayers'; with 947 votes; in Mornington 6M) ratepayers, with 751 votes; in Eoslyn 828 ratepayers, with 1022 votes; in Maori Hill 314- ratepayers, with 400 votes; in North-East \'a!!cy 730 ratepayers, with 1100. votes. The figures for St. .Kilda and South Dunedin are not available.
