THE DEFENCE OF THE CITY.
TO THE BDITOH.
Sib, —Is it true that the heavy b.l. Bin gun sent to Dunedin some years ago for the defence of this town is now being removed to Wellington, and that part of the mountings have already gone? Is it truo that this gun is less obsolete than others mounted in the neighbouring batteries, and, with double the energy, fires a shell double the weight of any of them? Is it true that it is the only gun here capable of preventing an enemy shelling the town from the open sea, and that it might with great advantage bo mounted on tits Ocean. Beach or thereabouts ? . ~ ■ Js it true that Wellington already has several of them; Auckland likewise, and Lyttelton two? Are Dunedin citizens aware that the Wellington authorities are stealing a march on them? —I am, etc, . Dunedin,, September 26. . Gus.
