"The Century Magazine" (The Century Company, New York; Mncinillan and Co., ! London). —The special features of the August number are the accounts of the battle of Manila Bay, by eyc-witnosses. There (ire no less than four narrative accounts, not the . least interesting' being that of the gunner of I the Bostqn. In each, reference is made to the enthusiasm for the Yankee cause shown by ; Britishers at Hongkong. "Facts About the j Philippines" shows very pointedly that they j may, if they are not already, the key to the Pacific. There are quite a number of papers j which have been called forth by the war. Mr I Shields contributes a paper on "The Arctic Monument, named for Tennyson by Dr Kane," with pictures from unpublished sketches. The paper on '' Confederate C'ommercß Destroyers" deals with the doings of the Georgia and Sbenandoah. Those who can recall the excitement caused by the visit of the Sliauaudoah to Australasia will remember the rumours concerning the vessel having i been soon on several occasions off the coast |of Otago and Southland. These rumours were ;;not ill-founded, for it appears the Shenandoah i after leaving Melbourne cruised for a few j weeks off tho New Zealand coast, but encoun- ! tcred nothing but a succession of gales and | rough weather. "How India has Saved her j Forests " should bo carefully studied by our [■politicians. Space will not permit of the enu- ! merntion even of other papers of an excel- ' lent number. , " Chamber's Journal " (W. and R. Chambers, London and Edinburgh).—Mr John Buchan's serial "John Burnet of Barns" is concluded in the August number. " Fruit, its : Cultivation, and Supply," is a suggestive : article. Some of the ways of the moneylending fraternity are exposed in the article [on "The Money Lending Inquiry." "Tho I Sky Scrapers of New York " is a popular description of the internal arrangements and conveniences of the wonderful buildings in I New York, in some of which, built on a plot ■of land 85ft square, accommodate 100 firms doing business, each occupying throe or fihir compartments. Tho landlord provides all modern conveniences—heating, lighting, ventilation, and cleaning, and elevator and telephone service. A letter can be posted in the building in a Government mail box, and tho tenant can lunch or dine without leaving the building. There are a variety of short papers, stories, etc., in the number. " St. Nicholas" (The Century Company, I New York; Macmillan and Co., London).— The August number comprises such a medley of good tilings for the young that it 'is difficult to single out a few for special mention. The articles on " The Cradle of Cyclones" and "The Guns and Armour of Our Navy" are, however, worthy of perusal by " grownups." Tho illustrations aro capital. "The Leisure Hour" (06 Paternoster Row, London). —There aro' some interesting papers in the August number, of which mention may be made of " Tho First Ascent of Mount .Elias," in North America, " Liverpool and its Docks," and "The English Language in Australia." Some particulars of the work done at Greenwich obsorvatory is givou in "The Census of the Sky.' Mr Louis Becko contributes a short story, " Rodman of the Shawnee." Tho illustrations aro fairly numerous and uniformly good. "Tho Boys' Own Paper" and "The Girls' Own Paper" (published at tho "Leisure

I Hour" office) for August are to hand. They ' each have many features which will commend , thorn to tho young of each sex. With " The Girls' Own Paper " is issued as a supplement a i complete' story. From the Religious " Tract" Society, London, comes the usual parcel of monthly publications for the month of August. "Tho Sunday at Home" contains a number of short, well-written articles on a variety of topics. ."The Cottager and Artisan," printed in fine large type,' will bo appreciated by the old. " Friendly Greetings "is for the younger generation. "Light in the Home and Tract Magazine," '* Child's Companion and Juvenile. Instructor," and '" Our Little Dots" are intended for still more juvenile sections of the community. All the publications are il- • lustrated.
