UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY.
- '■■■,■ ■"♦- The first meeting of the University Debating Society for the second'term of the present session was held in the chemistry lecture room last evening. There was a moderate attendance. Bet'ors the ordinary business of the meeting was proceeded with, ths Chairman (Professor Gilray) referred in faeling terms to the loss the university, and especially tue Debating Society, had suffered iv the death of Mr 0. M. Mouat, 8.A., LL.B. He said that tht late Mr Mouat had'been a most ponuiar student, and that he had never ceased to tako an active interest io the life of the university. On the motion, of Professor Gilray, seconded by Mr J. Collie, M.A., who warmly supported the sentiment expressed by the mover, a minute was recorded expressing the Debating Society's deep regret at Mr Mouat^s death and its appreciation of the practical assistance it had I received from hiro. The prize essay for the year i on "The Disadvantages of a University Education," by Miss Edith I/. Brown, was tastefully j read by Miss A. Bauchop, 8.A., an.l was well i recoived. Professor Gilray read a lengthy report lon the essays he had received, and offered some i kindly criticism on the views held by the writers. |He said that the prize eijsay was a very interest- ! ing one, admirably reasoned out and well ex--1 pressed, and thoroughly deserving of the prize. Daring the evening musical items wera rendered iby Miss A. Bauchop, B.A. (piano solo), Mr G. Harty (violin solo), and Mr R. N. Adame (song). '■ All tbe performers were loudly applauded. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
