A return has been issued by Lloyd's Register of Shipping, containing tables showing for the year 1897 the number, tonnage, and description of vessels added, to and removed from .the Official Register of the United Kingdom in that period, and the new vessels classed by the Register in the same time. The report shows that the total addition of steam tonnage during the year was 736,274 tons gross, and of sailing tonnage 49 697 tons grass, or in all 785,971 tons gross. The gross Seduction of steam tonnage from the Register imountß-to 577,217 tons, and of sailing tonnage to 200,127 tons, or in all to 777,344 tons. The tonnage sold to foreigners in 1897 amounted to the large total of 387.749 tons. Of this 286,795 tons was ateaiii and 100,997 sailing toDnage, while in the main the vessels purchased by foreigners were not of 'pry recent construction. On the whole,' during i 897 the atearbers on the Official Register of the United Kingdom have increased by 68 vessels and 159,057 tons, while sailing vessels decreased by 358 vessels and 150,430 tons. The total number ot vessels on the Register, therefore, . decreased-by 290, and the total tonnage increased by Bb'27 tons durinj the year. During 1597 495 new vessels, of 775,144 tons, were classed by Lloyd's Register. Of these 450, of 730,166 tons, were steamers, and 45, of 44,978 tons, sailing vessels.
