DEATH OF DR A. J. FERGUSSON.

The many friends of Dr A. J. Fergusson will learn with deep regret of bin death, which took place at his residence in High street about midnight on Friday last. Dr Ferguson was born in 1840 at Perth, Scotland. When he was about 15 years of age he took to sea and Bailed for Australia. On arrival at Melbourne it was found that the gold fever was at its height, and leaving his veiselhe went to the diggings. After remaining some two years in Australia Dr Fergusson returned Home, and stadied in the Universities of St. Andrew, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. After he had obtained his medical degrees, ho Bailed in the Britannia for New Zealand. Ha arrived in Otago in the early sixties, and immediately settled in Milton, where, some few years later, he married the second daughter of Mr William Poppelwell, of Sunwick: He remained at Milton till 1874, when he came to Dunedin, and began what subsequently developed into a most extensive practice. About two years ago his health begun to fail him, and he visited Sydney for its benefit. He returned but slightly improved, and proceeded, to the hot springs at Hanmer, and subsequently to Quesnstown. He was very greatly restored as a consequence oE these trips, but, unfortunatelyj he caught a. severe cold through, rising from his bed at night to attend a patient in the suburbs, and complications ensuing be w&s prostrated with a painful and protracted illness which terminated with his death. It is not too much to aay that there are few men in Obsgo who were better or more favourably known thjin the deceased geufcletnen. As an old resident remarked, fully eight out of 10 poople ; between here and Balclutha were personally acquainted with him, and his generous, open-hearted, highnpicited qualities are testified to on all hands.
