He is a native of Leitrim, Ireland, and joined the Royal Irish ConttabuUry in 1869, serving for seven years in County Donegal, ia the North of Ireland, ia the same district with Sergeant Gilles, of the Thames. Ha resigned and emigrated to New Zealand, joining thfl Armt>d Constabulary force in Wellington in 1876. On the abolition of the provinces he was transferred from tha Said force to the civil force, and got charge of Blenheim station, under Inspector Emerson, ami in a few year?, 'as thsrdclaes sergeant, was sent to Duuedm for a time, aud afterwards to Tim'aru as sargeant-in-eharge. He was promoted to be a second class ssrgaant under Inspector Peuder, and subsequently for some years, uader Inspector Bro-: ham, he went to Chriatchurch, aud thence to Napier, for seven years, under Inspectors Bullen, Kisly, and Emerson. He was promoted to be a fust-class sergeant in Pebiiury, 1894, and was sent to W»uginui as sergeant-in-cbarce. Two or threis months ago he went to the King Coantry as a "life insurance agent" on the touc which ended in the whisky raiding expedition.
