Arthur's establishment Mr A. Walker, who is lesving their employ, was presented witb a handsome set of gold studs. Last week there were three bankruptcies in the colony—a painter, a storekeeper, and a tailor. The Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands, accompanied by Messrs Clark'and M'Kerrow, is making an annual tour of inspection of runs in Central Otago. In September 45 estates were placed in tht, hands of the Public IVustee, one each amounting to £900, £890, £812, £248, £225. £150, £145, £102 ; three £100 ; one each £95, £53, £52, £25, £22 and £20; two eacb £17 ;' one each £16, £15, £13, £11, £10, £7; two each £6; one £5, tbree £4, one. £3, nine not exceeding £2, and one of uo value at all. There was a good attendance of members at last night's meeting of the Knox Church Literary and Debating Society.' Mr D. Main was chairman. Ths magazine was brought forward by the editor (Mr P. Milburn), and some of the contributions were read, the remainder being li>ft over till next meeting of the society. Those read comprised origipal poetry, articles on "War" and " Conversation ] versus Argument" (both cleverly written), an account of a camping expedition, and a skit on a previous meeting of the society. The twd last-mentioned were most humorously written, ond provoked considerable amusement. The papers were all commented npon by members, who agreed that the evening was one of the most enjoyable of the session.
