CANTERBURY DIOCESAN SYNOD.

(Fun United Pbess Association.) Christchuech, October 13. The annual session ot the diocesau synod wbb opened to-day. Bishop Julius gave a long addres* at a special service hold in the Cathedral to-night. He referred to the sudden death ot the Archbishop of Canterbury, and dealt at some length with the work in the disease during the past year. Referring to Armenia, ho said that the horrible cruelties were bringing matters to a crisis, and even the Powors were beginning to move. Euglish hands were not free of guilt. No Christian conld desire war, but better war than a guilty peace. For his own part ho hoped to see Russians at Constantinople. Referring to religious education, he was not without hope that there was a sufficient number of people in the country, the influence of whose early training would lead them to support the bill promoted by the churches. What was difficult now would bs far more difficult 10 years hence, when a generation had grown up ignorant <pf the Word of God. Dealing wita the subject of prohibition, ha reiterated the objections he had previously urged against it. But God forbid churchmeu cefuuding the trade. He doubted whether private and competitive trade could ever be properly regulated, more especially if the police had anything to do with it. In his judgment the true and proper remedy for the k buses of the drink traffic would be found on tbe lines of a State monopoly.
