NEWS AND GOSSIP.
Mr Divid Zimau, raineovroeratßeefton, has been granted lettera of aataralisation. It is understood that Mr Napier Bell is to carry out a complete drainage scheme for Botorua.
Last week there were four bankruptcies in the colony—a grocer, a storekeeper, a tailor, and a labourer. v>
Dr Walter Hislop, son of the Hon. T. Hislop, has been appointed to the National Hospital for Consumptives, at Ventmy Isleof Wight. Mr Marchant, Comraisaioner of Crown Lands, Christchurch, is to be transferred ta Wellington. Mr D. Barron, of Westland, will succeed Mr Merchant;, &o.d Mr W. C. *Kensing« ton, of Auckland, goes ;o Weatland. Mr James Mabin, a well-known farmer and dealer in .the Temubs District, and a one-time prominent piper at C&icfioaian gatherings, died on Sunday.
The monthly debate, of thrt All Saints' Young Men's Club wai held in the schoolroom on Monday evening, tno Eev. B. P. Cachemaille ia the chair. The subject taken was "Is Smoking Injurious Io the Health." Mr L. Bray opened in fct'e affirmative, and Mr J. Hopcraft in the negative. After discussion, in which several of the mamber3 took part, a vote was taken, which resulted in the negative side being maintained by a slight majority. The' Mount Benger Msif, published at Roxburgh, and owned for tha last 17 years by Mr John Weatheralt. has psi3sn<i iuto the hands of Messrs P. J. Dunne and W. P. Matthews, who have secured new plant, xnd propose to remodel the paper. Mr Dunne was for Rome time on the literary staff of the Waimea Plains Review, and also of the Tunpeka Tims*, and is regarded as a clever and capable journalist.'
