MR J. D. SIEVWRIGHT AT PALMERSTON.

•■ ■■•■ TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of to-day I find a report of Mr Sierwrigbt's meeting at Palmer*t on last Tuesday evening, in which it is stated simply that I moved " a vote of thanks " to the lecturer without giving any reasons fordoing so. I ask you to allowroe a word of explanation. I moved a hearty vote to Mr Sievwriyht for three specified.reasons—(l) Btctuss Mr S. had provided us with an evening's public enjoyment ; (2) because I regarded Mr S. as a personal friend, &o.';-(3) because I wished to say to Mr' S. that, if .he would come back on another occasion to Palmerston and discuss the evening's subject wi'h'me I would undertake to show or prove thit all bis main arguments were themselves fallacies. I advined him to change the title of his lecture from "The Fallacies of Prohibition" to "The Fallacies of Mr J. D. Sievwright's," statin? that he either did not know what a fallacy was, or had entirely missed the point. The feeble applsusethatfoHowed my motion was evidence that the audience felt the irony of the situation. I need not sdd that Mr Sievwright. quietly patsed over my third reason.—l am, &c, Palmeraton, September 10. James Clabkb.
