(Vat United Pbkss Association;.) Auckland, September 2. A cablegram has been received from theHon,' W. M'Culloch that he leaves London, per Tongsriro, for Wellington on 17fch in«t. Lively scenes ha?e ocoutred at the Women's Liberal Lsague, and 19 members resigned as a protect, they stated, against the tactics at the last election of the officers. Recriminative charges were bandied about. At the Police Court this morning Mr Northcroft, S.M., gave his decision ia the case preferred against; Constable Thompioa by J. Bt. Sher*, of assmltiug a prisoner named J. C M'Donald while arresting him for drunkenness and disorderly behaviour last evening. Mr Northeroft decided that the constable bad used more force than was uecoasary in effecting the arrest, and imposed a fine of 10s and 18s cost. Mr Northcrott farther expressed a hops that Inspector Hicksoa would represent to the department that, further tban a little excess of duty, thtre was nothing against the constable, who had a clean an« faultless list. With regard to P. W. Allen, who assisted in the arrest, Ijlt NortUoroft said he could aay nothing too high in praise of his conduct. Aa for the other people who followed the prisoner to the lock-up the less he said about them the better. Nothing coaid be mare contemptible than the coD'laet of people who would use inflammatory lauga&ge, which was calculated to incite a prisoner who was being arrested, and thus vsry likely oauso the constable to use force, whiou might get him into trouble afterwards. The evidence in the case w»a very conflicting and public opinion divided. It in stated that the fine and costs were paid to-day by public subscription. Wellington, September 2. A large wooden Sour mill, owned by Mr A. W. RomiH, was burned at Mustarton at 3 a.m. It was valued at £1000. There was no insurance. INVKKCAKGJLL,September2.
