The Wellington correspondent of the Wairarapa Times hears on very good authority that the chiefs of the Australian banks, all of whom Have their headquarf <na in AVellington, aid considtnug ■very seriously advisability of'furtker reducrog: the deposit rate*. These big monetary institutions are glutted with money for which there is practically no outlet. Oh this subject the Melbourne Argus- alleges- that the Bank of New Zealand hue, "begun a war of reprisals by offting to discount for the Melbourne and Sydney customers of its competitors at, wo understand, as low as 3} per" cent. It has not'sectfrrd'che business, however; for tho simple reason that tKe threa banks have decided to' letaiii- tlteir customers, even at a temporary loss. They may go further, and decide to discount for the cus- I tomers of tho Bank'of New Zealand 'in New- Zea- ' land itself at 3-percent, add in tluit case they will inflict more injury than they now suffer. We expect, however, that the rieceasifcy of making profits will lead to a settlement' of the existing difficulties b'cfore-lbng." , I The Taieri Advocate is informed that the crbps ' In the district between Waihola and Mllbtirn are promising, well!- and that when threshing is finished some' big yields will be chronicled. Mr W. Grey (of Milburn) isthreshiiiß a crop of wheat'1 that is expecteU to yield about CO bdshels to the acre, while his brother,- Mr G. Grey, had- a splendid crop of wheat. Mr Drinr.an (of Horseshoe Hill) will get a splendid yield from his wheat, oat, and barley crops. The oats aro atso looking well, and are expected to go ag high as 70 bushels par acre. A larger quantity, of barley has been sown this year than has been the caso' ior some time, and the farmers expect to get a { Very satisfactory return for the yield of this cereal, which, it is held by many, is not given the prominence that its'importance deserves.

DUNEDIN HORSE SALEYAKDS. Weekly Report.

Wright, Stbfhenson, and Co, report fas follows:- . .* There was & good attendance' of the pubiid'jat Saturday's sale, and what is even more satisfactory to chronicle is the fact that the proportion of buyers was greatar than usual. Doubtless the chief attraction was the sale bf a draft of Mr "W. G. Stewart's horses from Makaroia station, in the Wanaliadistrict. These horses proved to be of a very gopd stamp—medluia-aized, woll-built draughts, with splendid bone, all of them four, live, and six years old, unbroken, the progeny of Mr Robert Chartera'a well known Clydesdale sire What's Wanted (Imp,). They Were delivered at the yards in splendid drdsr by Mr Faulks, considering the long journej; they, had ddrle by road, and the estimation in which horses bred in Lake County are held waß fully demonstrated by the eagerness of the" bidding and the" prica obtained. The range.was from £13 to £19, one strong, useful, light-harness mare, just' brokett, In the same mob, bringing £14. The demand for strong, upstanding light hMtifiss horaes, imitable.for tramways or for butchers', bakers', grocers', and milkmen's delivery carta, is better Jill* n6w than we have seen it during the past two years, and we would strongly recommend clients with this class of horses for sale to place them on the market whilst the demand continues. There is tfso a good demand for young draughts, and well bred "cobby" mares are wanted by an outside buyer as the nucleus of a stud funn. Several good mares of this class mt6 sold on Saturday at very fall price*, arid taking the sale, altogether it was the most satisfactory, from A seller's point of view, that has taken place for sometime. Thd entries were1 mfird nUmtirous than usual, and nearly every lot eliaagod hands. We quote as follows:—Heavy draughts, four to six years, £22 to ■ £27; do, eight to ten years, £15 to £20; light and sraall do, £8 to £12 j aged and inferior do, £4 to £7; upstanding eprinKcart horses, young .itld Bound, £lZtd £10; wellbred upstanding hacks and llotuess horses, £16 to £20; upstanding hacks and harness horees, £10 to £li ; aged and inferior, £2 to £5.
