WOHLERS, MISSIONARY AT RUAPUKE.' An Autobiography. Translated from the German by John HougutON This Book is a history of the life and work of the Rev. J. F. H. Wohlers, Missionary at Ruapuke, written by himself—the original work having been published in Bremen in 1883. Coming to New Zealand in 1843, he established himself as a missionary amongst tbe Maoris at Ruapuke. He converted communities (to use bis own words) of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities of prosperous, civilised human beings, receiving for many yearn no remuneration whilst so doing, but producing his own food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the same after a civilised manner; thus saving people's bouls and their bodies as well. He preserved and fully records the old Maori mythology (a Kublime one), the custodians of which all died before his own demise. His Book is a valuable record of tho early history of New Zealand, and is written with great literary taste and poetic and pious feeling.
