MR EARNSHAW AND THE OTAGO CENTRAL.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —Theletterof your correspondent "Antihnmbng," dealing with onr friend Mr Earnshaw's inconsistent conduct in connection with the Otago Central railway, induced me to look up tbs xeport of that gentleman's spetch to hia constituents made on April 13, 1893. Your correspondent trnly points oat that long previous to that date the injustice meted out to the line by the present Government was as great, or greater, than it has been since Mr Earnsbaw uddrtssed his oonstitavnts in 1893, y«t the following was what he said then about the league and the line:—" As to the Otago Central Leagoe, bo had very Ht&a faith in it, for the men who wern on it wero the men who had opposed the construction of the line. , On the whole the members of the league, he believed, were opposed to the line, but whst they wanted to do was to bring pressure to bear upon the Govemraent, so as to embsxrass the Government and lead to other m«u obtaining power. . . . Hn was not going to harass the Government. He was not in favour of tha movement for the construction of the T*ieri brids« 14 miles beyond Hy<U, bnt wonld support the carrying on of the railway to tho point (Byan'n OroBsros) previously mentioned. ... He would not be a tool iv the hands of the league to put the Government in. a fate position. . . .For every one who had gone to the Oifcgo Centre! plains to make a home he believed that 50 had gone to Catlim .district." This is the way the hon. gentleman then spoke of the lies and tha leagoe, and we know the different tnno he now rings. Will Hi' Eonißhaw kindly explain the metamorphosis ? I am afraid, Sir.it is very much as yoor eoneeponiient *• Anti-hnmbog JJ ■&vys. —l m, &C, Donedm, March 9. Consisebnct. p. s.
