THE NAVIES OF THE WORLD. , Although dated bo fat back as September last, . a parliamentary paper, issued at the instance of Sir Charles Dilke, contains some interesting particulars as to the naval strength of the ■world Naturally, the 6«ures given are not up to date, as our naval strength compares somewhat more favourably wi h that of other nations than it did four months ago. The British Empire is returned as possessing 28 battleships in commission, as compare;! with 16 belonging to France, 4 to Russia 12, 'to Germany, 8 to Italy, 0 to the United States. As regardn coast defence vessels (armoured) in commission, the figures are: — British Empire. 5: France, 3; Russia, 2; Germany, 2; Italy, 0; United States, 1. Uf ■'j cruisers (armoured ard unarmoured) in commission we have 68; France, 29; Russia, 6; Germany, 15; Italy. 8; United States, 18. In regard to other Bhips, not torpedo boats, we have SI, as compared with—France, 23; Kussia, 12 ; Germany, 6; Italy, 11 ; United States, 9. Relatively to the general strength of the navy, the proportion of our ships building at the date of the return was rather below those of our rivals; bat several of these were more advanced towards completion, and one or two have since been commissioned. lv this class me had 10 battleships, as against France, 9; Russia, Z: Germany. 3: ItaJy. 2: United States. 8. France comes next with £1f1.825,i'40. Rouahly speakiDg, France spends on her fleet twothirds of the amount of thfl United Kingdom.
