TRADES AND LABOUR.

AUCKLAND TAILORESSES' UNION, (Fkost Our Own Correspondent.)

Auckland, March 12;

Mrs Hendri, who has succeeded in reorganising the Auckland Tailoresses' Union, states that the feeling between employers and employees is now of the most cordial character, aiid that the girls employed in .the clothing factories have taken up with enthusiasm the projects on foot fot tho amelioration of their working conditions. Mrs Hendri's reception has been of the most courteous nature at the hands of the employers, and the enrolment of girls is proceeding satisfactorily. Mrs Hendri's prinoipal mission at present, in her capacity as organising secretary of tiie Tailoresses' Union, iB the promoting of a grand faucy fair to be held in about three months. As to the nature 'and objects of the fancy fair, Mrs Hendri says it is intended for tho benefit of the girls engaged in the clothing and shirt factories, but the precise shape of the'benefit has not yet been decided ou. Most probably, however, .tho proceeds of the projected fair will hs devoted to the establishment of a sort of friendly club for the girls in a hall or other building where they may meet each Other in social reunion, with a library, reading room, piano, &c. The intention is to work on the lines bf the Dunedin Tailoresses' Union, and to follow its example. During Miss Morrison's recent visit to Auckland she was able to render the union excellent service.

THE CONCILIATION BOARDS. (Faoii Oub Own Cobhesfoktdbkt.)

Wellington, March 12:

It was expected that the Government wonld to-day have been able to gazette the employers' representatives on tho .Boards of Conciliation for the Canterbury and the Otago and Southland'districta, the employers' unions for these districts having failed to elect representatives. A hitch has occurred, however, in connection with the suggested representatives for Canter: bury, and at the last minute the appointment of the Canterbury representatives had to be postponed for a "week. I understand. that, owing to a misunderstanding, two gentlemen were chosen to represent the employers upon the Canterbury Conciliation Board, both of whom belong to the same firm. Messrs G. P. Farquhar and G. L. Sise, however, have been gazetted as tbe employers'representatives foi. Otago and Southland, and a meeting of that board can now be at once convened and any needed inquiry immediately instituted.

RAILWAY SERVANTS' SOCIETT.

Auckland, March li

In the decision come to by tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants the rates of pay hitherto in force are principally adverted to, as the society wish to avoid asking for any increase till tbe colony's finances improve. Some changes were made as to the rating of the different; departments, and these will be forwarded to the Government for consideration.

ATTEMPT TO PLEECE SHEARERS. The following telegram has been received h^ Inspector Pardy from the secretary of th« Commissioner of Police, Wellington:—" The Inspector-general of Police at Sydney wires that the advertisement in Otago papers signed ' William Bruce, box H45, G.P.0., Sydney,' oft'oring to secure , engagements for shearers in New South Wales, is a fraud. Please notify newspapers."

Some time ago four gentlemen who were j strangers to each other were playing whist, when one of them had the whole 13 trumps dealt to him, and yet he did not win. " Impossible 1" you say. Not at all. His partnei led ah ace, he trumped it, and his paittiei

flnng down bis. hand in disgust. The only .' trump" that never fails is the new Waterbury Watch—a '_ marvel of cheapness. Obtainable every where- :■-.••
