There are at present 22 cases of typhoid fever in the Christchurch Hospital. Three typhoid patients have succumbed to the disease receutly.
The Napier papers are criticising the severity of the sentences psssed by Mr Justice Buckley iv the Supreme Court there last week—his first criminal session.
The deer shooting season at Nelson com-? menced on Saturday, and that morning Mr Percy Adams secured a fine stag possessing 10 perfect points and weighing fully 3501b.
The Papanui prohibitionists have expressed strong disapproval of Mr G. AY. Rustell'a action during the recent contest. Mr Russell recently strongly advocated the return of men to the House of Representatives who, while supporting the Liberal programme, would cot be . etvile followers of the Ministry; yet he supported the Government nominee in the recent contest.
Mr M'Queen, of Knapdale, declares that the small birds are getting fat on the grain, which is poisoned to kill them. AA'hen the grain is first laid the birds wiil not touch it, but as soon as a ehower of rain washes the poison off they ■eat it.
What may be done by young women capable of rowing was demonstrated the other evening (says the Post) when Misses Pownall and Stringer, of AVellington, and Miss Bell, of Palmerston North, who were rowing three gentlemen in a pleasure boat, rescued from a watery grave in the harbour an immersed member of the Star Boating Club, whose boat had capsized.
There died at Tauranga last week, at the age of 83 years, Mr Crawford Marley, who, at the age of 10 years, rode on the first railway engine started by George Stephenson, between Darlington and Stockton, and which old engine is now enshrined as one of the original mementoes of the advent of the railway era.
Diseased cattle must be very prevalent in the ffiauawatu district, to judge from the evidence of Mr A. K. Blundell, stock inspector. In a case in the Palmerston court the other day he stated that he had condi mned over 100 animals during the psst three jearg, and had never been proved wrong. Ir, is but reasonable to suppose that a goc-d number of diseased animals have not come uuder the eye of the inspector. An unpleasant reflection.
