THE COST OF ABATTOIRS.
I Sydney has a difficulty about abattoirs as i well as Danedin. It is proposed to abolish the | abattoirs at Glebe Island, and tbere is a difficulty in .getting another site. In connexion j with tbe matter the Sydney Morning Heraid i has obtained particulars of tbe cost of construci tion or similar establishments elicwhere. The slaughterhouse at Rotterdam is under municipal control. The buildings and yards, wbich cover 12 acres, are fitted with the most approved machinery and appliances for slaughter^ ing animals snd for the treatment of the meat. The piaat is estimated to bave cost, about £4-6,000. At the time of its completion in 1885 64- bead of cattle and 300 hog-i were killed daily, bnt since th™ extensions have been made. The slaughterhouse at Osuabriick was opened ia 1887, and in tbe selection of the site tbe necessity for providing space for establishing, an adjacent cattle market was kept in view, as also tbe desirability ! of beinij able to connect with the main thorough- { fares and existiiig railways. Tbe area of land j utilised for the purpose, exclusive of roads, was jSi acres. Tbe buildiugs were designed for j slaughtering 80 head of cattle, 120 cilves and j sbeep, 80 swine, aud 12 horses per day. The • manager's offices and dwel'ing rooms, and a ; chamber where'exsminations for trichinosis are made, are opposite the building. There is also a block which contains tbe bacon - ciiripg rooms, the employees' mess room, __c., and beyond this are the two main slaughterhouses, both ab-mt the same siz?, one for cattle and tha other for swine. There am likewise a cold air store, a refrigerating and engine houfd stabling for cattle Mid horses, various fhedß, a slaughterhouse for diseased cattle and another for horses. The buildings are constructed of roughly-dressed limestone faciid smooth within and without, to a height of 7ft 6in, with cement, snd tbe floors are generally of cement and concrete. The refuse is removed by specially constructed waegonx". The cost of theso works was about £15,000. The ! slaughterhouses at Kooi^sberg ia E*st Prussia
I were erected in 1893. They are built witb I sidings to a railway line, the estimated cost being £100,000. The arrangements here pro- ! vide for a miximnm daily slaughter of 100 j head of oattle, 400 oalves snd sheep, aud 400 j swine, the number of slaughtering days in the i year being 100.
