TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —Your leader in to-day's issue ia to the poiut. It shows the need for improvements in our defences. lam credibly informed tbat our beach forts are almost useless, and that our only useful gnn has beeu removed from the Central fort to Wollington, the mountings being still here. The Minister for Defence, has received a scare from the Christchurch defeat, and may now be determined to concentrate bis forces for the defence of Wellington. In any case, Dunedin iB now paying the penalty.— I am, &c, Dunedin, February 19
