OPERATIG CARNIVAL.
fhe Operatic Carnival attracted a. large gathering at the Garrison Hall last evening, and the affair promises to be a great success, The pretty dancing in the early part of the evening was especially watched with ■ pleasure, and Signor Borzoni is to be congratulated on the happy results Which; have attended his efforts in this direction. The grand spectacular valse, " A Study in Light and Mowers," the "Pas a Quatre," the Bolero, and the Neapolitan Tarantella, in which 24 children took part—all elicited a perfect storm o{ applause, and the audience would fain have had this part of the programme prolonged even at the risk of lodngtheir opportunity of becoming the possessors of Bouie of the lovely articles exhibited in the Btnlls. The piece de resistance of the evening is a characteristic composition from the pen of:Signor,K. Squariae entitled "The Battle; of Sedan." Thiß Work was written by Signor Squarise in commemoration of the FrancoPrunsia war of 1870-71, aad was performed at the Albert Hall,' Adelaide,, on, March 22, 1883. The composition contains some stirring music, and .the , effects obtained by the " composer ■ are s certainly". original and most effective. The army on the march for the seat of war is de-picted-in the opening movements, and subsequently some really pretty effects are introduced to represent the stirring scenes of camp life. A climax is reached when the German cavalry and infantry successively chaige the heights of Sudan, and the subsequent entry of the returning victorious army,' into Berlin. Under the direction of Signor iSquarise the • music was interpreted in capital /style,. and. the performance throughout was punctuated by hearty roanda of applaute. i The various movements are illustrated by lime- , light pictures of the battle, while portraits of the French and German Emperors, the Crown Prince of Prussia, Bismarck, yon Molke, and other distingniibed personages are shown. The fernery j appears to be a popular place of resort. The labour j expended in turning a portion of the Garrison Hall j ■■>. into such a remarkably pretty sylvan retreat must, ■' have been considerable. Some perfect specimens of the- New Zealand ferns are here to be seen, while some of the mosses have been brought from as far as the West Coast. . | 10-night the entertainment Will be repeated. .
