The French warship Scorff, which is on her way hero from Hobart, is a wooden vessel of 1500 tons register, and is an auxiliary Ecrew steamer, her extended spetd being 105 knots an ho:ir. We have been'favoured with the following particulars of the repairs effected to the Fifeshire at Lyttrltoo: - The ship bavins been docked'in the Lyttelton Braving dock, a thorough survey was made by Captain Willis, surveyor to Lloyd's Registry for the port of Lyttelton, and Mr Edward Roberts, of Dunedin, -consulting engineer, a3 surveyor for the owners. The damaged portions were found to be confined to the forward portion of No. 1 ballast tank, and to the after i-nd of No. 2 tank, and forward part of No. 3 tank, necessitating the removal I rod straightening of Xi steel plates each 14ft long, » great many of the frames, aud a large part of the cellular structure of the vesoel's bottom composed of longitudinal Kir erf, floor plates, gusset plates, horizontal and vertical angle bars, also all the broken cement aW- the replacing of same, including six nuw plate.". from the particulars then obtained a sptc ncation was prepared by the urveyors, tenders w ere called for, and tenders received from Ohristchurch, Port Chalmers, and Wellington firms: The tender of Messrs Anderson, of Christchutch and Lyttelton, to carry out the work in 26 days w s accepted. Kubsequei.tly mother contract for other work was entertd int» with the same firm for which an extension of time was granted of four days, bringing the lime to 30 days in all. Messrs Anderson commenced the work immediately with three shifts of men working day and night, and being under a heavy penalty for nsn-completion within the specified time and by unremitting zexl succeeded in getting the work done slightly in advance of contract time. Xbie n'oife was eUDerintended b_y ilr,

Andrew Anderson, and inspected during the whole Txriod by Cipt&in Willis, and for a portion of the time by Mr Roberts for the owners. Finally the outside of the vessel and the tanks were tested by the lastnamed gentleman, who pronounced the work to bn very satisfactory. The vtsJel came out of dock on ''Thursday, the 6th'of February, immediately commencing' to tales' in cafrco. It is no small credit to New Zealand that they have firms in the various po:t« who are able to ta-k • and TOccesofully carry out important work of tl>> kind, anil al^o that thsre are dry docks canabl* < t docking the vessels, but it is now well known th-v several ship>, sonic 10 or li, now trading to these ports , are unable to enter the. Lyttelton dock owing to the great breadth of the modern cargo steamer. Tlm Lyttelton Harbour Boaid have several schemes under consideration for tho widening of the present dock in order that the port may not be behind tbe i imes.
