THE NATIONALIST CANDIDATE ELECTED. Chhistchubch, February 13. The election for the Christehurch seat, rendered vacant by the appointment of Mr W, P. Reeves to the A^BDt-generalship, took place to-day. Though dating the day there waa ). little outward evidence oE excitement, the supporters of the three candidates worked thaii hardest and the poiliug was heavy. Kr Charles Lewie, tho nswly-elected member for Ohristohureh, is a native of ths.t city, and tha son of a respected early colonist, the late Mr David Lewis, who w»s in his lifetime a wsllkcown tradesman ia Christchurch. Mr Charles Lewis is a farmer in the HolsweU district, and has for many years taken an active interest in political affairs. Ho is strongly opposed to tha Government and supports the platform of tha National Association.

The number of names on the Chrisrohuroh ' roll for the present election was 17,559. Tha ■number on the roll at the general election in 1893 was 14,612, of which 6710 were women. ■
