CRIMINAL SITTINGS.

The criminal pession was commenced this morning before Mr Justice Denniston. His Honor, in charging the Grand Jury, stated that although there were a large number of oases none of them were of a serious character, an" the jury would cot have much difficulty iv dealing With them. His Honor then referred at considerable. ieugfch to the csoo in which a medical man was charged with having assaulted a well-known solicitor. He said that there was nn dispute as to the assault taking plsco, and also without any provocation, which ia law would be looked upon as furnishing any justification. Benjamin Hale, on remand from Inst Bcssion, charged under the Bankruptcy Act with having failed to keep proper books of account, was found guilty. His Honor said there was no presumption of fraud, and as the quegtion came np when Hale sought his discharge from bankruptcy the case would be met by binding accused in his own recognisance of £50 to come up ,for sentence when called upon.. Albert Edward Oppenheim (17), for breaking and entering, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment ; James Butterfield, for the larceny of n. watch and sum. cf money at Rangiora, 12 months ; Isabella Alexander (19), larceny, was placed on probation for 12 months; Emile Buskigson, alias " German Charlie," breaking snd entering, was sentenced to three years, and Richard Daniels, for a similar offence, to 12 months ; William Bright, unlawfully on the premises with intent fro commit a felony, was found guilty and sentence deferred ; Elizabeth Anthony (17) pleaded guilty to forging a cheque at Ashburtou, and was placed on probation for six mbnths. A. De Renzie pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting R. D. Thomas, chairman of the Hospital- Board. The hearing of tbn .case was nob concluded when the court at 6.50 ».m. rose for the day. The grand jury found true bills in all the cases onthecalendarexcept those of Alexis Manaud (charged with administering poieon) and George Qupwell (indecent •ssan.lt;). '
