From Westport last week 6010 tons of coal were exported, of which 4650 tons were shipped by the Westport Coal Company, 700 tons by the Knights of Labour, and 660 tons by the Cardiff Company. A correspondent in the columns of a contemporary combats Dr Do Laterals statement that there is no relation between the drinking of alcohol and typhoid, and gives the following illustration : —i" Duriug my stay in Hotham, in Melbourne, 1887, typhoid was rampant at Hotham, and the alcohol imbibers its principal victims. The farmer bad two paddocks, and he put the mare and foal in the poorerof the two, where there was only rough native grass, with a little clover that had spread from other lands. The foal got injured (it was not proved how), and the mare died. The owner claimed for damages for the mare, on the ground that she had not been put in a proper paddock, and succeeded.
