ATHLETIC NOTES.

It hiving b:en represented to the committee of the Duucdin Amateur Athletic Club that the time previously fixed for the reception of entries for the annual sports meeting, whioh is to be held this day week, was likely to be inconvenient to some of fee competitors, the time has been extended till Monday night. Tha secretary of the club will be in attendance at the City Hotel this evening and on Monday until 9 pin for the reception of entries. A number of entries have already bsen received. A good deal of interest is being evinced by members of the local club in the approaching meeting, particularly in view ot the fact thai ujjok the results of the meeting the cotumiUes wiil huve to select the club's representatives for the New Zealand Championship sports, which are to be held at Christchurch on December 28.

There is a lot of training bemg done every evening on both tie Calcdonmu and Carisbrouk grouudo. W. A. Low, the present 440) ds and 880 yds champion of the colony, his been in training for a month, and it ia expected that he will give a good account of himself ntxfc Saturday ; and not only then, but in the New Zealand and Australasian Championship meetings.

T. Martin, who will ba a candidate for the sprint events, is doing fa*t work every eveniDg on the Caledonian ground, and X. Mhcfcay, another sprinter, is doing active work at Csrisbrook and showing good form. J. G. M«cdonslii, the University Football Club'a speedy thi;te-quftrteiback, is also in training for the short distance events.

O. M'Cormick, the holder of the colonial record for hammi.-r-throwitig and weigatputting, is, besides training tor the weights, preparing for competition in the ppriut eren'.s. and is showing such promise tha' his chanc-s for the lOOjds club championship are considered decidedly rosy. In the weight-putting events, M'Cormick will meet with opposition from R. Martin and "Doull, who competed ngaiust him in the Ch-nipknship meeting in fiunedin in February 1893. Uartin aud Doull are both in regular practice and may probably push Sl'Cormick in those events.

Bowden and Brown are two new ctembers of the club who are practising sprinting. The former has a pretty style and should ruu well forward in the events in which he competes. The sprint races promise, indeed, to be on attractive feature of the meeting. W. V. Bennett is training xt*adily for the long distauce iveut*, aud is going very well in his taking style. Hia chance for the Thre> mtle Champioasbip of the colony at the approaching mesting in Christchurch is much fancied.

Another long-distance runner who is showing promising furco is M'ludoe, and there <ue several "dark" men at Port Chalmers who may be expected to furnish surprises. B. H. Neill is training regularly for tbe middle distances and the hurdle events. E. .7. Mirams will also b<j a candidate for the middle distances. P. MuccSfey is practising for the long jump and hurdleß, and H. C. Low will ba b, cnudidate for the hurdles and higa jump. A good team 'jf walking meu is in traiuin?. G. Qallow.iy 13 returning t» the treck jujd will compete next Satutdny. Maxwell, who ingoins very well, .is Jiiely to chow up. Mitchell, a l-KOeatly remstaited msiri, and Reid, who ia showing good form, are also in steady work. A feature of this year's meeting will probably be the number of entries from *talctcs outaidtDuncdio. Keddell, from Oaiaaru, and Crat-.-sh»w, from Kurow, are expected to bo aniouf tbe uumbar. Kesu competitiou is ccnfidentl) expected ia all the evenu of the meeting, the cycliug events at which will probably be run in he&ts, and tho D.A.A.C. should receive a largf meaeute of jiublic patronage. Tho novelty of the meeting will be the 440rds Relay Itace, in which teams of four meu, representing various athletic organisations, will compel. The D.A-A..C. is tntt-ring only out' team but sever*! of the footbull and rowing clubs are cxpwited-to be sttougiy ieprefcut>d in this event. Rolay races-h*vc proved highlj attractive features of the sports mtcting^ i<t which they have, up to the present, been held in the colony.

A metting of tbe committee of the DuueJin Atoateur Athletic Club wm held lact eveniug. aod uttoudud by Dr Huberts (in the chair), Measr* AY. A. Low, W. J. Burk, J. Hutcbjsjn, D. Duncan, C. H. Arudt, and J. Howlisuu. Meisrs W. H. MackfeDzio and E. J. Halford were elected members of tho club. A number of preliminary arrangements for the annual sports meeting ou Saturday next were settled.
