PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED

The Christinas number of " Pears'a Annual," a copy of which has been sent to us by Messrs Prietor and Ormsby, fully sustains its reputation of previous years. The story—Charlea Dickens'a "The Hannted Man: A Fancy for Christmas Time" —is profusely illustrated by Charles GreeD, R.I. ; and it ia needleas to say that in respect of paper, printing, aud general excellence of the halftone illustrations Messrs Pears'* publication is fully abreast of its contemporary publication.*. Accompanying it are three presentation pWes, printed in colours. These are entitled, " Flowers of the Ea«t," a decorative paintidg by W. S. Coleman, in which the eolonring is vtvy rich; "The Long Bill," by A. W. Holden, which appeal/! to the humorous side of our nature ; and a charming pioture called " Suspense," in connection with which it is ejqslained that it is a reproduciicn of the very last painting executed by the late Mr Burton Barber, tbe celebrated papier of children and animals, in whoEe work the Queen displayed so great an interest. The publication and its accompanying plates 3re altogether of a very meritorious character.

, " The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes" for September contains some capital illustrations, including reprints of old sporting prints. " The Sport of the Rojahs," by Major Baden-Powell, treats of pig-huntiog ia India, and in "Sport in.the New Forest:" we have the contrast, for the rajah is usually accounted rich, while tb.9 gportin ti)e Hew Forest is mostly For the poor man. The E»rl of Suffolk and Berkshire oontribntfs " Ascot Reminiseeneos," and Lord Waisingham has 6omethuij. to nay aboat partridge shooting. The secretaries of the M.C.C. and Surrey C.C. give thoir views »s to the coostitalion of "The Best Eleven," which, of coarse, refers to cricket. "Fencing " is declared by tho writer, May G. Norris, to ,b9 peculiarly suited to women. Sir Edward SullivaH contributes an article.on 'fM°dern Yachts and Yaoht Racing," which contains Bomc hints that may prove of service. " Notts by Rapier " are always readable. The October number of " Cosmos," an illustrated Australian magazine (Messrs Prietor and Ormsby) gives an interesting account of the Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital. Colonel G. W. Bell contributes a paper on " Democracy v. Socialism," and Mrs Charles Clark a (ketch of Miss M. Louice Mock. Mr G. B. Barton reviewß Mx Collinbridge's " The Discovery of Australia." The illustrations are extremely creditable. •
