Composers and Musicians." •■ Not only was a short history of the life and works of every great musical genius given from.the time of Bach in 1685, hut Mr R. 0. Jones, thelanternirt "V to thesoeiety, threw oa to the screen the portrait ' of esch composer referred to.. The slides Were taken by Mr Barth himself from a variety of Sicturei, and they excited the gteatest interest, 'eedlf si to say that the lecture itself was a most interesting one. -Necessarily it was Somewhat lenethy, but at no stage was it wearisome. Not orily was a short sketch of the great composers of - bygone.times given, but Mr.Barth also made reference to notable musicians of the present day, including some who have visited these colonies. )He modestly placed himself at the end of the list, and ■mentioned thfct ho studied- for nine'years under John Francis Barnett. "Eminence;"- he ' added, "is only tobe gaintd by work and 'perseverance. ,In the case of some of whom I have ' spoken it,was. a work of love for music, and' nothing would keep them from it; others weie kept hird at it .by a strict, stern parent—so different from most colonial parents nowaday! I wai fond of Uy games when a boy. At one time cricket chimed more attention than my mother liked; and she threatened to, turn me out of the house; to do for myself if I did not practice,mbre, co I worked at my piano and composition steadily f.ir four or.five hours daily." The 'lecture Was illustrated by Miss Blanche Joel, who played several pianoforte piece*, and Mr H. B. Smith,-who sane. To-night: there -««ill be given an exhibition of views illustrating "Whitcombe Pate (recently traversed by Mr Park, of Hokitika), also a-aeries of slides, rebfang to the humorous Vagaries of a demon cat.
