;, Sib,—With, reference to J:A. statemeut which appeared in two Dunedm papers last week— that upwards of 400 persons had died of cancer in New Zealand during the last 12 months, and that in the lost year tbe number had increased by 100—I write to say that if the Regi.trar-geiwral's returns 'are to be relied upon the fcot»l number-is nearer 100, the-normal monthly humbar being about 7ot 8. In one case I found 14, but in tbe follow^ month it was *.-. In one month I found 15, but the majority of case-! are 5, 7, 8, and so on. If thereis a large number in any ooemonth there is almost suro to ba a smull number in the nexfc. I write this so that it msy not ba accepted that deaths from cancer are fo numerous in New Zealand as hss been represented, I believe the number of cases are iacreasiog, which is greatly to be deplored.—l aai, &c, Dunediu, August 19
