TH* BARQUE EXCELSIOR'S PASSAGE.

The well-known barque Excelsior had a terrible passage of 52 days from Kaipara Heads to Sydney, duruig which the master experienced phenomenal weather. The passage between the two ports usually-occupies 12 days, so there is little wonder that great anxiety was exhibited as to her safety, bjie left Aratapu on June 6, and was towed clear of Kaipara Heads on the lith. There she met a Sv &S •; Eate> »nd f°ur days later saw the land about 30 miles W. from Kaipara. Thence she had moderate to strong gales from N.W. to S.W with w^v. Ti^cfw oc=aßional heavy squalls of hail. «f X^ c S' W" saK s her sails were.blown out of the bolt ropes witlv a crack like the report of a gun. All the sails from the topsails down were either blown away or split up at various times and a strong S.W, gale.still prevailing, while the provmons were getting short. Captain Henderton determined, as there was little prospect of getting to the westward, to bear up to the nearest port- £* Ml 3h nV,e^, lnir-, N' E'4 00 mUe«. and Lord Howe Island, W JOO mileo. He therefore shaped a course for Norfolk Island in order to procure a SUPply Of Provisions. , Porty-eight hours later she arrived off Norfolk Islaud, took in supplies, and kept away for Sydney. Thence she had a favourable run towards Lord Howe Island, but when between the island and Elizabeth Reef the wind again veered to the westward, blowing a terrific gale for the next four days, attended by high confused seas the ship head - reaching under her lower topsails and more uiide? water thaii over it. On the third day ■she shipped, a heavy sta, which lifted the deck earpo, starting the lads and stanchions, and washing away part of the bulwarks on both nort aud starboard sides, floodi.i« the decks, and rausing the vessel to labour heavily—the puruns bain, hardly able to keep her free. It waHhKind necessary to jettison the deck cargo and every thing movable about the decks to k<rep her free As she was now 44 days at aaa, great anxiety Dre" vailed. On the following day the wind veered to" the south and i'he made sail, steering to the went ward, getting light variable winds and smooth seas ; while the decks wero dry for the first time since she left Kaipara, and occasion was taken to caulk the waterways and round the stanchions and everything possible wa* done to get the ship' into fair order. Variable winds and weather were then experienced, and she reachfld Sydney ou Aiignist 4, 52-daya out from New Zealand.
