He converted comnmnitie* (to use bis own words) of loathsome savages, sunk in poverty and degradation, into communities of prosperous, civilised human being*, receiving for many years no remuneration whilst so doing, but ■producing hia own food out of the soil, and teaching the Maoris to do the same after a civilised manner; thus saving people's souls aud their bodies as well, ne preserved and fully records the old"Maori mythology (a mblima one), the custodians of which all disd before his own demise.
