THE BALFOUR SHOOTING CASE.
The inquest on the body of Hugh-Stewart will be opened at Riversdale before Mr R S Hawkins, coroner, at noon to-day, tho prisoner (Keown) being taken;from Invercargill by the early train in the morning, so as to be present. A Riversdale coirespondent wires tbat a post mortem examination is to be made by Dr Donaldson (of Gore) and Dr Bauchop (of Lumsden). Inspector Psrdy is »t Riversdale to conduct the proceedings on behalf of the police. According to the Southern Standard the unfortunate affair arose out of a esse recently tried in the Gore S.M. Court, when Meiers Reid and Gray obtained judgment againßt Keown for repairs to an engine. Middlemiss and Stewart were sent out to seize Keown's horsc-sf or default and hence the trouble. It is said that Keown felt very sore over the affair, and delayed paying the amount, though he was in a position to do so. Hence his quick temper got the better of him when the bailift'd vrere cent out.- The judgment was satisfied on Monday afternoon.
