THE POLITICAL WOMAN.

' : Wanganui, July 22. The following resolutions were carried on Friday last by the committee of the Wnngauui Women's Political League :— *
" That this committee, while recognising the desirableness of a colonial scale of salaries for publiq school teachers, protest against the ' adoption of the scheme drawn up by tbe New Zealand Educational Institute in Jauuary 1895, on the ground that it perpetuates for our female teachers an injustice which it aims at removing in the caso of male tetchera—viz., inequality of pay for similar work; and this committee, feeling strongly 'that it is the duty of the State to be: tho example of eqml p.iy for equal work, irrespective of sex, pray the Hon.' the Minister for Education -to sanctiou no scheme which fails to""'recognise this principle." "The committee of the Wanganui Womsn's Political League, having carefully considered the bill prepared by the Rescue Society (Auckland) for submission to the Hon. . the Minister for Justiie, and headed "A Bill eutitled The Suppression of Immorality Act 1895," which has been forwarded tor their endorsement, find themselves obliged to enter , a protest against its becoming law; flrst, be- " cause;" though recognising the duty of the State to prevent, as far as possible, the spread of crime and disease, they consider ib beyond the power fit Parliament to enforce individual morality; snd second, because they object to the police being endowed with the extraordinary powers which some ot" the clause? of this bill propose to confer upou them; and third, beCiusa they are in considerable doubfc as to the benefits derivable from compulsory residence in so-called "reformatories," aud in the case of neglected aud criminal children they would prefer fco see fche boarding-oufc system fully tested."
