THE BURNING MINE.

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.

Sydney, July 23,

A small portion of the eastern cut of the Broken Hill mine caved .in at midnight, but owing to the dense smoke it was impossible to see the bottom. Steam is now being forced into the mine with a view to smother the outbreak. The part where tbe lire.is ■raging: is exceptionally beaviiy^ timbered owing to the shifty nature of tha ground. The. flre in "the mine is still unabated, though water has been poured in all day long from all available sources at the rate of thousands of gallons per hour. Smoke is issuing from several new crevices, showing there, has been a considerable spread. The smelting and chlorodißing works are. stopped in order to give more water, and several hundred more men were thus thrown out of work. During the... afternoon several heavy shots were fired and between three and four thousand tons of earth were i displaced.! This, however, has had little efiect, .and'it is evident that: much more will be needed if tpe plan is to be of any use. The engine-house and winding .plant now stand on the edge of a. cliff, and' will be sacrificed if more powder: is used. The Adelaide "directors and the superintendent of the fire brigade have arrived, and decided to pump the: gas which ;is generated in the chlorodising works, into the mine, and a start will be made to-night. The Melbourne' directors and the heads" of the fire_ brigade arrive in the morning with a large supply of chemicals.
