THE RISE OF THE CLERICAL POWERS.
TO THE EDITOa,
Sir,—-The immoral lottery scheme has fallen like .the walls of Jericho at the mere' blast of the clerical trumpet. Little do these parsons know their power! Let them once mix in the secular aflaiw of the laity, and they will support them to a man. Dr Parkhurst killed the New York Tammany Ring. The spiritual power is not dead, only asleep. . . : What about the Agent-general's circular, the morality of which has just been' whitewashed by the party vote? Nobody dreams that the members voted according to their consciences. What about the investment of the Post Offica Savings Bank funds ? la that right ? Tnsh, say the politicians, doth God see? To yout tents, O Israel.—l ara, &" July 13
