NEWS AND GOSSIP. The Ksikonra, which left Lyttelton yesto day, took a fair number of passengers and a full load of produce. Mr Rawaon, S.M. at Invercargill, is trans-, ferred to the Bunsfcan district, Mr Nogsnfe Wood, S.M. and warden, retiring. Sir Patrick Buckley told a deputation at Gisborne that he could do nothing in the hslfholiday question, but would lay before the Minißt«r for Labour a request to stay proceedings until Parliament met. The Wellington Carriers' Union have decided to ask the Premier to alter the system of electing members of the Wellington Harbour Board in the'direction of giving householders a vote or the establishing of the one-man-one-vote system. At 1 o'clock yesterday morning a fke destroyed a nine-roomed house at Ghristohurcb. owned and occupied by Mrs Elizabeth Bailey, and a small cottage adjoining owned by Mr Jones, of 3?iinarci, and occupied by Mr D. Howard. No effects were saved. Bailey's house was insured for £250 in the Standard, and the furniture for £250 in the Liverpool and London and Globs ; and Jones's house was insured for £75 in the South British.
