The Trades Hall Conncil passed a resolution . strongly condemning the Tariff Board proposals as likely to . destroy important industries which have grown up under Protection, to throw thousands of 'workers out of employment, and render a large amonnt of expended capital unproductive. A RISE IN SILVER STOOK. Sydney, May 14. Owing to tbe prospect of a great Chinese loan being issued, the market for silver stocks was very active to-day. Sharp advances were recorded, and there was a strong tone. A NARROW ESCAPE. The Aberdeen and White Star liner Nineveh, from Melbourne, grounded in a dense fog three miles south of Botany Heads, but floated off four hours later without injury. NEW AUSTRALIA. Several returned "New Australians" have reached here in an entirely destitute condition. Funds are being raissed to send them to their homes. They confirm the statements that the settlement is in a very bad state, and that the settlers are suffering great hardships. They complain tbat they could not get any refund of the money paid to the association to assist them in their return.

THE LONDONDERRY MINE. 1 Peeth. May 14. Splendid battery stone has been struck in the Londonderry mine at the 100 ft level. It is rumoured that the famous shoot first struck has been picked up. Shares rose, and large sales have taken place. The stone, though good, is not of,a sensational value. MICHAEL DAVITT. Adelaide, May 14, Mr MichaoJ Davitt was cordially welcomed on arrival. He originally intended to remain in the colonies six or eight months, but owing to the death of his child is now unlikely to stop as many weeks. He returns via America.
