A house at Toowoomba, Queensland, occupied by a Mr King and bis family, was burned down. King escaped, and on retnraiiiß to rescue his wife ana children waR uuSocated. The others escaped, badly burned. Mrs King is in a critical state. Mrs Dean is seriously ill, suffering from paralysis, the after effects of poisoning, on a charge of administering which her husband was found guilty and sentenced to death. The Government have offered to place a detective at the disposal oE the Investigation Committee, and to render every assistance to clear ut> the case. Mr Kicker, general manager of the South British Insurance Company, Auckland, has arranged to submit for confirmation oE his dfccotora' proposals for the purchase of the business of the Mutual Insurance Company of Tasmania. All risks aTe to be taken over. The Conference of Railway Commissioners at Melbourne has arrived at a basis of agreement for bringing to an end the tsrifi war which has been going on in connection with the railway traffic. Tha differential rates affecting trade are to bj abolished In each colony, and a common milsage rate substituted. The profits are to be pooled and divided periodically. Mrs S. A.
