— At Mostar, in the Herzegovina, a husband and wife died a most extraordinary death together. The wife went to the wine cellar, to fetch a mug oE strong new wine for her husband's supper, and as the enormous cask was not full she leaned over and fell into it. Her husband immediately dropped in after her to save her, and both were drowned in a few minutes. Their property is valued at £20,000, but they lived as Dimple peasants. — The reason why bioodstains cannot be washed out by the ordinary means of soapwater and scrubbing brash lies in the fact that all blood contains a great proportion of oxide of iron, which permanently discolours wood or any sort of porous stone should it be left to dry on it. — The intensity of confined sound is illustrated at Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight, where there is a well 200 ft deep and 12ft in diameter, lined with smooth masonry. When a pin is dropped into it the sound of it striking the surface of the water, 182 ft below, can be distinctly hoard. — One of the queerest companies recently started is that formed to breed black cats upon au island in the Puget Sound. Cats imported from the Netherlands will de used in breeding, and the animals will be fed upon fish. A lar CTe profit is espected-from the skins. ' °
