THE RECIPROCAL TREATY.

At a meeting of tho Cabinet the Premier brought under notice the protest made by the Board of Viticulture against the reciprocity treaty arranged by the Premier of South Australia and the Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand. The protest urged that it would be the doath-blow to the wins trade with New Zealand, and would retard federation and intercolonial freetrade. The Cabinet decided to communicate with the Premiers of South Australia and New Zealand, asking them not to take steps to ratify tile treaty on the ground tbat it, would prove a hindrance to federation, and requesting them to hold the arrangement ia abeyance for a few months till it could be seen if it was possibles to put the federation soheme adopted at the Premiers' Conference into operation.

At a meeting of farmers in the southcaotern district a resolution was passed protesting against the proposed reciprocal treaty with New Zealand, on the grounds that it would bonafit certain fruitgrowers at the expense o£ the farmera, and that it would retard federation.
