THE ASSAULT ON A CONSTABLE.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sic,—l thoroughly agree with you that the prisoner Lawrie, who co brutally hicked and otherwise assaulted the young constable who had him in charge on Saturday last, deserved to be imprisoned without the option of a fine. But for the timely interference of a gentleman, the assault would either have ended fatally, or in permanent eerioiis injury to the copsfaible, as the prisoner, taking advantage of the constable having been dunned by a kick on the bead, was choking him and striking him under the ear. The following incident will show the cowardly nature of the ruffian: The prisoner having ultimately agresd to go quietly, the gentleman—seeing the constable had partially recovered, and was therefore more than a match for the prisoner—withdrew his grasp, when the prisoner immediately struck again at the constable's ear.

Such men as Lawrio ought to be imprisoned without the option of a fine for a first such brutal and cowardly assault, and should get a taste of the "oat" in addition for a repetition of the offence. The constable deserves credit for the manly way he stuck to his prisoner whilst in a halfBtunned condition, and for his unnecessary forbearance undor the circumstances.—l am, &0., February 20. Eye-witness,
