It is intended'to hold a " World's Exhibition of Hotel Equipment anc'Travel" in Amsterdam during the summer of the present year.
' Judging by the length and elaborateness oE the report sent to us of the first day of tha Wellington Racing Club't Summer-meeting, tha Press Association appears to have a very erroneous idea of the importance of the-gather* ing.
Those of the public who were fortunate enought to visit H.M.S. Boyalist on Monday evening had an extra treat provided for them, as the Garrison Band under Bandmaster George were aboard and played several selections ia their -well-known capable manner.
The usual indoor meeting of the Donedio Field Olub was held on Saturday evening. Me W. T. Monkman, in the absence of the prm< dent, took the chair. There was no formal business, but members spent a very enjoyable couple of hours inspecting the fine collection of native beetles exhibited' by Mr Chalmers (who was accorded a hearty vota of thanks) and other natural curiosities, conspicuous among which was a handsome specimen of Maori carving on human bone found at St. Clair, a native carnivorous plant (Drosera binata), and ' a rare fern (Hymenophyllam malingii). Me Michael and an assistant were kept busy showing microscope slides, and altogether a most interesting evening was spent. An excursion to Green Island takes place-on Saturday next. The Dunedin Sailors' Kest was crowded la9*^ night by a considerable number of the seamen and marines of H.M.S. Royalist and friends of the work carried on at the Best. The lattet had invited the crew to tea, after which a / number of shore friends, several of whom were old service men, gave interesting addresses. The meeting was opened by Captain Wilßam Thomson engaging in prayer, all then joining heartily in the National Anthem. The men of the Royalist frequently gave out hymns to ba sung. A neat bag with contents, including Testament, hymn book, &c., was handed to every seamen present. The following ladiea presided at the tables:—lKesdames William Brown, Cook, Mirams, Bergquist. Lindsay Hackie, Grant, Black, Teevan, and Dick. Mr A. K. Falconer, the seamen's missionary, occupied the chair. It was past 11 o'clock ere tha Rest was cleared, many having lingered fo< personal conversation. Altogether it was a verj happy gathering.
